Pemba Town is situated at the South West of Cabo Delgado Province, bordering at the North with Pemba / Metuge District, at South with the Mecufi District, at East with the Indian Ocean and at the West with Pemba/Metuge District. With an area of 19 square kms, and an estimated population of 121.967 inhabitants, this district has a population density of 4.468.3 inhabitants per square km..
Pemba Town is divided in 10 neighborhoods known as Paquitequete, Ingonane, Cimento, Natite, Cariacó, Slto Gingone, Eduardo Mondlane, Mahate, CHUIBA and Muxara.
Pemba Towns original village
Paquitequete, a large Kimwani settlement, was the original village which gave origin to Pemba Town. It is still a colourful neighbourwood, diferent from the center of town itself where, daily, dhows unload fish, macuti (palm leaves), and mangrove wooden poles for construction, coming from the islands.
Pemba town - The Capital
Pemba town is also the capital of Cabo Delgado province. The coordination of governance is assured by meetings between the directors of the different sectors, which take place every other week.
The traditional structures of power are active on the district and interfere on the resolution of conflicts on common resources and further subjects of local interest.
The local government is composed by the Provincial Direction of Agriculture and Fisheries and by the Health and Education ones. There are also other public institutions such as the Police, The Registration Office and Notary and the State Information Services. The mechanisms of coordination of governance include the District Executive Council periodic and extraordinary sessions.
